Imagine rolling out of bed-a thin mattress filled with cornhusks-and putting your bare feet down on a cold dirt floor. A hot shower to start the day? Forget it. There isn't even a bathroom inside. There is no light in your one-room house, except for the first bits of rising sun coming through the cracks in the walls. And there is no fire in the fireplace yet, because it's your job to start it. What about school? Maybe, if there is time and you don't have too many chores this morning.

It is hard to imagine life for Abraham Lincoln when he was growing up nearly two hundred years ago.
Abraham Lincoln was elected during the greatest crisis in our country's history, when the arguments over slavery tore the nation in two, dividing families and friends. Born in a time when slavery was legal, Abraham Lincoln had always hated the idea that one person could own another. As time went by, Lincoln knew that America could not last as a nation if slavery was allowed to continue, and he served as president throughout the four terrible years of the Civil War.
There are many stories about Abraham Lincoln that are myths or legends-many of them made up after he was killed, just days after the Civil War had ended. Some of these stories show that Lincoln was brave, honest, funny, and a great leader. All of those things are true, even if some of the legends are not.
