But there are only thirteen stripes. Why? Those red and white stripes stand for the
thirteen states that made up the United States of America in 1776, |

year that America was born. And you thought thirteen was
an unlucky number!
The thirteen separate states agreed to stand together as one nation to
help one another. That is how our country got its name - the United States of America. |

The U.S.A. has changed a great deal during the past two centuries. Over the years more states
were added. That is called being "admitted to the Union," just like getting an admission ticket
to the movies. Only the states didn't have to buy a ticket!
